NEWSFLASH! Overhauling Wärtsilä engines
What began as a 3-week assignment ultimately grew into two 6-week projects. With a 9-man team and working with a renowned Dutch maintenance company, we overhauled 4 Wärtsilä 6L32 engines with an output of 560kW per cylinder. We serviced 13,440kW in 12 weeks’ time!
After two 6-week rounds, we can finally say that all the engines are back up and running.
We’d like to tell you more about what we got up to in those weeks.
First, two engine blocks were disassembled and transported to the Netherlands to re-bush the idler gear bore and the upper and lower liner surface. Once these works were completed, we assembled the crankshafts and camshafts of both engines. The engine blocks, weighing 18 tons per block each, were then transported to the ship with a low-loader. Once on board, the blocks were fully rebuilt using all OEM replacement parts. Two other engines were fully disassembled on board and all engine-driven pumps were overhauled on board, with the other components all being replaced by OEM replacement parts. Once this work was completed, all the engines were thoroughly tested and the break-in programme was followed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
